What causes pelvic pain during pregnancy?

Before you try to understand pelvic pain, it is essential to understand the causes of pelvic pain and aches that happen during the pregnancy. There are various stages of pregnancy, and there are different kinds of pain during different stages. The body is preparing for the natural birth of the baby, which causes inflammation and pelvic pain as a result. Muscle imbalances begin to start when the baby is growing inside. A mother goes through several changes when the belly is going, and there is an increase in the upper back tension, which can cause severe pain and issues.

Another cause of pelvic pain during pregnancy is the pressure that is created while the baby is growing. It can cause lower abdominal pressure, which is not good for the vagina.

What causes pelvic pain after delivery?

Women experience different types of pain after the delivery of their babies. The pain occurs differently for every person, and there are treatments for postpartum pelvic pain that can ease the pain.

  • Perineal tearing: Women are advised to wait for around six weeks to heal properly from the vaginal delivery. The rate of healing is different for every person, and it is common for that area to be tender after the delivery. The tear can be larger and deeper, which takes more time for the treatment and healing to happen.
  • Muscle weakness and imbalance: The pelvic pain can start because of the overstretching of the abdominal muscles. It can also lead to discomfort during the pregnancy, but the imbalance of muscles can take long before it is adequately healed.
  • Damage to pelvic floor muscles and the abdominal muscles: The damage that happens to the muscles during pregnancy can make it difficult to bend, lift or carry. Various treatments help in healing the pain and making it better after delivery.
  • Separation of pubic bones: The normal part of the delivery is allowing the baby to come out through the birthing canal, which can lead to inflammation and pain in the pubic area.

Pelvic organ prolapse: The pelvic pain starts in this situation when the musculature is not working efficiently enough or supporting the internal organs. It can lead to feelings of heaviness and pain which can cause pelvic pain.

How to relieve pelvic pain during and after pregnancy?

It is the first step to help yourself in solving and healing pelvic pain. The pelvic floor muscle starts holding tension and stress after delivery which is why it is essential to release the tension and make it better. You need to find a comfortable position where you can lay on your back or just rest in a slightly reclined position. Then you need to rest your hands on the belly and inhale and exhale slowly. This exercise will help in healing and relaxing the pelvic muscles, which will further reduce the pain.

Body mechanics:

You will have to pick up several things after having a baby, like a stroller, baby seat, baby, and many more things. While you are doing this, you will have to take care of a few things like:

  1. Draw your belly button towards the spine to tighten the abdominal muscle. It will help in protecting the pelvic muscle and engaging the muscles properly.
  2. Make sure to keep the objects you are lifting close to your body to reduce the backache issue that you might have.
  3. When picking up the heavy things, make sure to bend your knees so that it doesn’t become more difficult for you and minimise the pelvis pain overall.

Gentle strengthening:

The pelvic floor exercises are similar for both men and women, and they can help activate the muscles and stabilise the pelvic girdle. You need to activate the deep abdominal muscles by exhaling and inhaling. Try to engage your pelvic floor muscles by squeezing your muscles like you are trying to stop the flow of urine.

External support:

Sometimes the muscles in your body need the right kind of boost. You can wear the belt during and after pregnancy so that it becomes easier for your muscles and also help you with exercising.


The body goes through various changes during and after pregnancy which is why to make sure that your posture is right so that you can minimise the tension in your lower and upper back.
